Citrus Elementary student wins Orange County Math Bee

News 6 anchor Ginger Gadsden hosted annual event

ORLANDO, Fla. – A Citrus Elementary School student on Tuesday won the Orange County Invitational Math Bee hosted by News 6 anchor Ginger Gadsden.

Harrison White, of Citrus Elementary, won first place after the second-place winner was knocked out in the last round.

The final question that crowned Harrison as the winner was about how many cars would be needed to fit 818 people on a roller coaster ride.

Math skills run in the White family. Harrison's brother, Grover White, won two years ago.

The first-place winner was awarded $1,000; second place winner Gabriella Diaz, of Durrance Elementary School, received $500 and third place winner Nelson Estivene, of Shingle Creek Elementary, received $250.

This year's included fourth-grade students from 20 schools.

Participating schools were Citrus Elementary, Cypress Park Elementary, Durance Elementary, Eagle’s Nest Elementary, Eccleston Elementary, Ivey Lane Elementary, Killarney, Lake Gem Elementary, Lakeville Elementary, Maxey Elementary, Mollie Ray Elementary, Ocoee Elementary, Orlo Vista Elementary, Palmetto Elementary,Phyllis Wheatley Elementary, Pineloch Elementary, Riverside Elementary, Sadler Elementary, Shingle Creek Elementary and Washington Shores.

The first round of the competition, or minibees, was held in each participating fourth-grade classroom the week of April 24.

The second round of competition was held the first week of May.
