WINTER PARK, Fla. – A 15-year-old teen charged in the beating death of Winter Park High School student Roger Trindade had his first appearance in Orange County juvenile court Friday.
Jesse Sutherland was denied bond by an Orange County judge Friday afternoon. The judge granted the state's request to extend his detention until Jan. 5.
Sutherland and Simeon Hall, 15, are charged with manslaughter. A 14-year-old boy is charged with tampering with a witness.
Sutherland was arrested in Virginia, and the other two teens were arrested in Orange County on Dec. 7.
Sutherland was extradited from Virginia and appeared in juvenile court Friday afternoon.
The state said in court Friday that Sutherland was the one who threw the first punch at Trindade, and that he bragged about the attack to his friends.
"Jesse Sutherland is the person who actually punched Roger Trindade in the face with such force that he knocked him to the ground. When he was on the ground and flinching, he then spat on him," the attorney for the state said. "Afterwards, he bragged to his friends about the knockout punch."
Sutherland's father, Benjamin Sutherland, appeared in court with his son. He refused to speak to News 6 after the hearing.
Hall and the 14-year-old were denied bond on Dec. 8, and an Orange County judge granted a detention extension until Jan. 4.
The state said they requested the extension to give them time to put together their case.
"This case shows there is approximately 300 pages worth of documents that we're reviewing. There's approximately 100 potential witnesses. We're still in the investigative stages. It is a complicated case," the prosecutors said.
