No bond for man accused of killing 2, injuring 4 in Sanford shootings

Allen D. Cashe appears before judge Tuesday

SANFORD, Fla. – The man accused of shooting six people on Monday in Sanford appeared before a judge in Seminole County on Tuesday.

Allen D. Cashe received no bond in connection to the incident that killed 35-year-old Latina Herring, her son and critically injured four others.

The shooting occurred on March 27 around 6:20 a.m. at a home on Hays Drive. Hours earlier, police responded to two separate incidents involving Cashe and Herring.

No description found

Police said Cashe confessed that he kicked in the door of Latina Herrings' home, armed with an AK-47 assault-style rifle.

Herring was shot seven times and killed in her bedroom, police said.

Her two sons, Branden Christian, 8, and Brendon Christian, 7, were sleeping on the couch of the home when they were shot three times, the report said.

Police said Cashe must have been standing directly over the boys when they were shot.

The family confirmed Tuesday morning that Branden had died from his injuries. The boy's grandfather, 56-year-old Bertis Gerard Herring,  who was also in the home was shot five times in another bedroom.

Police said Cashe told them he noticed movement in the dark and thought Herring Jr. may have been coming after him. Cashe shot Herring five times, according to police.

Officials said 7-year-old Brendon remains in critical condition at Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children in Orlando.

Bertis Gerard Herring also remains in critical condition, officials said. A GoFundMe page has been set up to raise money for the family.

“It is heartbreaking to know that this young child lost his life needlessly, and in such a violent manner. Our
hearts and prayers are with his family during this tragedy. We will continue to focus on the case against Allen Cashe and to seek justice for all of the victims and their families," Sanford Police Chief Cecil E. Smith said on Tuesday.

The Seminole County Schools superintendent also offered his condolences to the family on Tuesday and said grief counselors will be available.

"We are deeply saddened to learn that one of the young student victims of yesterday's horrific and senseless shooting has passed away from his wounds.  The entire Seminole County Public Schools district grieves for the family and entire Sanford community.  There are no words to describe the tragic loss of a young and innocent life taken so soon.  We have placed grief counselors at all our schools directly impacted by this incident for any student, faculty or staff member that requires their services to cope and heal.  The counselors will remain in place for as long as necessary," Walt Griffin, superintendent, Seminole County Public Schools said.

The two innocent bystanders, Lazaro Paredesquelite, 43, and Winter Springs High School student Rakeya Jackson, 18, who were also shot by Cashe after the shooting in the home, are both in stable condition, police said.

During the hearing, Cashe asked the judge why he was on suicide watch when he was not suicidal. The judge said they were not discussing that in court Tuesday.

Cashe is charged with first-degree premeditated homicide, five counts of attempted first-degree premeditated homicide, one count of felon with a firearm, and one count of violation of parole - felon with a firearm.

Cashe is set to appear in court on April 17 for violating his probation, and will appear before another judge on May 2 on his new charges.
