Paintball gun used to shoot bear out of College Park tree

ORLANDO, Fla. – A bear is out of a College Park tree Tuesday after two people who told News 6 they are contractors for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission shot paintballs at the bear.

The bear was first spotted early Tuesday morning in the 1000 block of Bryn Mawr Street and the 900 block of New Hampshire Street in Orlando, police said. The Orlando Police Department tweeted that the bear appeared to be in a tree on the 1200 block of Country Club Drive. 

FWC told News 6 that the bear is a yearling, which means it's in its second year.

Video showed the bear resting in the shade of a tree. FWC officials said that they wanted the bear to come down on its own, adding that using a tranquilizer could harm the bear.

The group that shot the paintball gun tells News 6 they want the bear to keep moving. 

FWC said the bear doesn't pose a threat and that the bear will avoid people at all costs.

FWC said that it is uncommon for a bear to be in a tree near downtown Orlando, but that it is more common in the later months of winter and spring. Officials were asking people to stay at least a half of a mile away as FWC and a state biologist was monitoring the situation.

OPD tweeted that the bear appeared to a a "baby or juvenile" and was last seen headed south.

"Please keep pets indoors and don't approach, Orlando police said.

"When I went out to walk my dog at 8am, policeman stopped me and said bear spotted on Maxwell and Clouser!" a College Park resident posted online.

No injuries have been reported.
