Can changing your handwriting change your life?

Expert: Better handwriting can help you kick bad habits

ORLANDO, Fla. – Beyond our signature, many of us barely write anymore. Marcia Gervase is a handwriting analyst who says we are missing out on an opportunity to improve our lives.

"You've lost the ability to have a wonderful tool at hand to help you succeed in whatever way you want to succeed," Gervase said.

She said cursive handwriting is a tool that can help improve your life and rewire your brain.

"When you deliberately change that, you're telling the brain we're not doing it the same old way anymore," Gervase said. "We're doing it this way now. When you do that, those deliberate intentions and deliberate motor behaviors actually create new neuropathways in the brain."

Gervase has been a handwriting analyst for more than 20 years. She said she's learned that certain letters can tell you a lot about your personality.

"The cursive T supposedly is the one letter of the alphabet that people create that can show the most personality traits," Gervase said.

It has to do with how you cross your Ts. A high T bar means you're a risk taker. Too low on the stem could be bad news.

"You cannot make a low swinging T bar and have confidence in what you are able to accomplish," Gervase said.

The letter S is also a good indicator of personality.

"Sharp-pointed S people can say no and they can set boundaries," Gervase said.

She said that a round S usually means that person says yes too often. She calls it her "roll over and play dead S."

The good news is you can change. Gervase said by changing your handwriting, you can get rid of a bad habits.

"Get rid of the ones that aren't working for you and start replacing them with ones that are healthier for your body, mind, soul, physically, all of that," she said.

Can handwriting really reveal personality? Local 6 anchor Ginger Gadsden gave her two writing samples from someone she doesn't know.

Gervase immediately pointed out an upper-case letter in the middle of a word shows that person has a bit of rebel in them.

As she examined the sample some more she began to point out the letter G and how it looked like the No. 8. She said that points to the person having creative writing ability.

She also explained that the way the Ts are crossed means the person has a lot of enthusiasm and is excited by what they are doing.

That sample belonged to Local 6 Chief meteorologist Tom Sorrells. When asked what he thought of the analysis, he said he thought it was pretty accurate. Then he took her findings to someone who knows him best -- his wife.

"She went, 'Oh, wow. That's freaky that it is that close and dead on," Sorrells said.

So if you're feeling stuck in a rut and can't figure it out, you might want to pick up a pen and paper and write a new beginning.

Gervase said practice your handwriting at night right before you go to bed and in 30 days or less you'll start to notice changes.
