ORLANDO, Fla. – A teen impaled by a pole after a crash is recovering. His family told Local 6 that the pole missed his heart by less than a centimeter.
The crash happened Wednesday at Willie Mays Park.
Latravous Powell Sr. said his nephew Mikhail Cannon, 18, called him seconds after the crash as he was still behind the wheel trying to keep his cousin alive in the passenger seat.
Smandre Law, 17, was awake, and alert and somehow survived.
"There were angels over him for the injuries that he suffered," Powell said.
"They were going pretty fast, pretty damn fast. I (saw) the car flying by my house," said Melvin Lawson, who saw the Lexus speeding recklessly before it crashed through the fence and slammed a pole through the windshield. "His friend was doing all the talking, (saying), 'Don't say nothing. Everything will be alright. We got you.'"
After rescuers cut Law out of the car and rushed him to the hospital for surgery, police arrested Cannon for grand theft.
"Whenever you do things, you reap the benefits, but you also suffer the consequences. So, in a car, riding around, (if you) do stupid things, things happen. He pretty much understands what he has to go through after the healing process," said Powell of his nephew.
Powell said he hopes it's a lesson learned for both teens.
Police said they will release more details Thursday about what led up to the crash and arrest.
