Drivers create dangerous situation at Daytona Beach school bus stop, parents say

Volusia Schools moving stop, adding two others to safer locations

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Volusia County School District is moving a Daytona Beach bus stop after parents complained that drivers ignoring the law were creating a dangerous situation for their children.

School parent Victoria Santiago said it's been a daily struggle to keep kids safe at the bus stop on 13th Street and Derbyshire Road and it's only getting worse. She showed News 6 cellphone video from Thursday morning of drivers ignoring children loading the bus, going the wrong way and making a turn.

"They're constantly flying up and down this road, day after day," Santiago told News 6.

Four different schools, from elementary to high school, use that bus stop. The Volusia County School District said it has received complaints and recently re-evaluated the bus stop location.

The district sent an e-mail to News 6 Thursday and said it will not only move the stop but add a second stop. Parents will be notified by mail starting Friday.

The new stops will be at 13th Street and Pine Ridge Drive and 13th Street and San Jose Boulevard southbound.

The district said the new stops will be in place starting Nov. 27.
