Crews extinguish fire on roof of SpaceX building

Crews handle blaze in Cape Canaveral

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. – Brevard County Fire Rescue crews responded to reports of a fire at a SpaceX building in Cape Canaveral on Sunday afternoon.

Just after 5 p.m., three units were dispatched to the roof of the building at Magellan and Grouper roads. The fire was put out by 8 p.m.

In a text to News 6 partner Florida Today, Brevard County Fire Chief Mark Schollmeyer confirmed that the fire was on the roof. A firefighter was taken to a hospital for heat exhaustion, but no other injuries were reported. Port operations were not affected by the fire, which remains under investigation.

SpaceX has been leasing a property at 620 Magellan Road since March of this year.

"Because of the difficulty accessing the area, the fire continued to grow until we had the ability to access it -- getting up to that height (and) getting to that location was very difficult for us," said Capt. Brian Dennison, of the Cape Canaveral Fire Department. "None of their personnel was injured. They were not doing any processing or anything."

John Taylor, a spokesperson with SpaceX, released a statement, saying: “This afternoon, a small fire occurred on the roof of a SpaceX building at Port Canaveral. Thanks to the Canaveral Fire Rescue and the Brevard County Fire Rescue, who responded within minutes, the fire was extinguished. There was no damage to any SpaceX equipment or hardware as a result of the fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation.”
