NEW SMYRNA, Fla. – A surfer suffered a shark bite Monday morning off New Smyrna, Volusia County Beach Safety Ocean Rescue said.
The 58-year-old man was surfing 30-40 yards offshore around 10 a.m. when he was bitten on the foot.

The man did not see the shark and was able to get out of the water on his own, officials said. He was treated at the scene.
Officials said it is the first reported shark bite of 2017.
Last year, 15 shark bites were reported in the county.
