APOPKA, Fla. – A 6-year-old boy witnessed a possible attempted murder-suicide near Apopka that left a man dead and a woman injured.
The Orange County Sheriff's Office was called Wednesday evening to the 1600 block of Valeview Court to investigate multiple gunshots heard by neighbors.
Deputies said Sophia Ware Stanley, 47, who was separated from her husband, Glenn Eugene Stanley, 53, was found in a driveway with what appeared to be a gunshot wound.
Glenn Stanley was found lying next to his estranged wife with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was later pronounced dead, deputies said.
Sophia Stanley, an employee of Orange County Public Schools who works at the Ronald Blocker Educational Leadership Center, was taken to a hospital. As of Thursday, she was in stable condition, deputies said.
"She definitely has someone watching over her. It's crazy," neighbor Lauren Handy said.
Handy tells News 6 she learned about the shooting from a neighbor.
"He came out screaming and just said somebody had got shot and then he shot himself," Handy said.
Friends of the family say the couple was married for 30 years. The sheriff's office says they were separated.
"You never think someone would have that type of thing on their mind," neighbor James Harris said.
Francina Boykin told News 6 that she knew the couple who was shot. She said they had been having marital problems and were breaking up.
"She had left and moved out," she said. "She was coming back to pick up some things and, apparently, he confronted her. He shot her, and their 6-year-old son was present and witnessed the shooting."
It's not known who has custody of the boy.
According to court documents, Glenn Stanley has a history of drug, weapons and battery charges in Orange County. News 6 couldn't find any history of domestic violence, reports or court documents filed between the couple.
Orange County Public Schools confirmed Sophia Stanley works in the main office.
Friends and family of the victim say on social media she is coming through the tragedy strongly.
