VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – A former Daytona Beach police officer said he was driving home from work when his dash cam caught a driver speed past him and crash. Jared Shaheen said without a second thought, he raced over to help.
"I don't see myself as a hero, it's just something that you do. It's my instinct," Shaheen said.
The 26-year-old said he knew something was going to happen to the sedan racing past him around 3 a.m. down Ridgewood Avenue.
"I swear he probably hit at least 100," Shaheen said. "He's bouncing back and forth, from curb to curb."
Seconds later, the driver flipped over and crashed.
"From my prior law enforcement experience, when you see an accident, a lot of debris flies. The first thing that came to my mind, is oh my goodness, he just wrecked," he said.
A police officer also just pulled up to the scene as Shaheen ran over to the driver.
"He was starting to crawl out of his passenger side window. Me and the officer helped him out and got him away from that vehicle, just in case it went up," said Shaheen.
"The car was an absolute mess. It had heavy, heavy damage. It was on its roof."
Luckily, Shaheen said the driver was okay and suffered minor injuries.
While Shaheen is trained for these types of situations, he said it's very important that if you see something, say something.
"Call 911 immediately. If you're not going to help, then do your best by getting someone there who can help," he said.
