How to get a better deal

Consumer advocate says what you get might surprise you

Everyone likes a hook-up, a good deal, or a deep discount. But is there an art to knowing how to get one?

"As consumers, we just have to get in the regular habit of asking," Josh Elledge told News 6.

Elledge has a website, podcast and blog, where he teaches consumers how to cut costs.

When shopping for a hotel, you should get the least expensive room you possibly can at the hotel you want, whether it's on a third party site, or the hotel's own website, according to Elledge.

When you check-in is when you have the chance to get much more for your money by simply asking for an upgrade and giving a reason, according to Elledge.

"Any reason at all. It can be, 'we're celebrating my kid's getting a great report card, we're celebrating a birthday,'" Elledge said.

Depending on the occupancy rate you might be surprised what you get.

"I have gone from a $60 room to a $500 suite, by applying these principles, it absolutely works," he said.

You might know to call your credit card company to ask for a lower interest rate but Elledge says you should be calling your other providers regularly for deals and discounts.

"Because guess what?  They're out there, but you wont get them unless you ask for them," he said.

Elledge recommends you call your cellphone provider and your cable company every other month to look for discounts.

"There's always new promotions and you wont know those promotions, unless you ask for them," he said.

"A lot of time they're not going to openly volunteer that information to their current customer base, unless you call to ask," Elledge said.

Yelp, Trip Advisor, and Open Table are just a  few sites that allow consumer's to post reviews.

Reviews have become increasingly more important to companies according to Elledge.

So when he dines out, he lets servers and managers know he often writes positive reviews.

"They almost always will go above and beyond to make sure they provide excellent service and I've had people bring me free stuff," he said.

And don't forget to follow your favorite restaurants on social media. Sometimes it is the only place they advertise one-night only deals.

Elledge's website is SavingsAngel.com.
