Central Florida girl battling brain cancer receives messages of hope

Family sets up mailbox for community to send letters

OVIEDO, Fla. – A father found out the unthinkable about his 5-year-old daughter.

"Just wishing it was all a bad dream," Wade Bernosky said.

His little girl, Rylee, was recently diagnosed with brain cancer.

"She was complaining about headaches at school and stuff like that," Bernosky said. "So we took her to the ER and they did a CAT scan and they saw a mass near the brain stem and then she was rushed to Arnold Palmer and that's when we started the surgeries."

The family is supposed to get more test results Friday but for now, Rylee has to stay at home and wait. That's when her grandmother came up with an idea.

"I thought it would be a great idea for her to have her own mailbox,"  Kim Bernosky said. "When she comes to our house she likes to check our mail."

"Cheer-me-up cards, anything," Kim Bernosky said. "When she opens them, we want to fill up her room with all the cards. If it flows out into the living room that's great."

Just last week, Rylee had not received any mail, but with the help of News 6 viewers and social media, she had plenty to open Saturday evening, according to her family.

Her family made a Facebook post about mailing cards to Rylee and it has already been shared hundreds of times.

Family members also told News 6 that Rylee's prognosis is looking good, and that her type of cancer has a 90 percent survival rate.
