Officers in Lake County get results at annual Special Olympics Torch Run

Special Olympics Florida State Summer Games happens next month

LAKE COUNTY, Fla. – It’s a tradition for Luis Martinez. Even in wheels, he’s making sure to cross another Special Olympics Torch Run off his list.

“I appreciate everyone that is pushing me right now this is a dream for me, so thank you very much,” Martinez said.

Officers from all over Lake County gathered once again to support athletes participating in this year’s Special Olympics Florida State Summer Games next month.

“As police officers, it’s giving back to the community, especially to our Special Olympics,” Andy Razo with SWAT Clermont police said.

According to Special Olympics Florida, each year, over 5,000 officers carry the torch on a 1,500-mile relay through nearly 70 counties in the state leading up to the opening ceremony of the State Summer Games.

“It’s a blessing because it shows us as athletes that everyone here really cares and that’s why I love this event and I thank each and every one of them for helping me run and just compete,” Martinez said.

The State Summer Games is set for May 17 and 18 at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex and USTA National Campus.
