DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – A house fire Saturday in Daytona Beach was caused by an improperly discarded cigarette, according to the Deputy Fire Chief Jessica Matthews.

Firefighters responded to the 700 block of Pelican Bay, making a quick attack of the fire and containing the flames to where they started as they were extinguished, Matthews said in a statement.

No injuries were reported and all occupants of the home were outside when units arrived, the statement reads.

“Did you know that in 2021 there were 7,800 fires due to smoking, 275 deaths, 750 injuries, and $361,500,000 in (losses?)” Matthews said. “If you choose to smoke, please ensure your cigarette is out completely, stay alert, never smoke in bed, and dispose in an ashtray or sand bucket.”
