Sanford police investigate two shootings near Historic Goldsboro; 1 dead, 1 hurt

Detectives located a person of interest with a firearm, police said, but it is still unclear whether the two shootings are connected

SANFORD, Fla – Sanford police are investigating two shootings that left one man dead and another person seriously injured, according to a news release.

Police said officers were called around 3:20 a.m. Sunday to a report of a possible shooting with injuries near Historic Goldsboro Boulevard and Mangoustine Avenue. Officers found a victim with a gunshot wound, and the person was taken to a local hospital, police said.

While officers were responding, police received another 911 call reporting a shooting near Historic Goldsboro Boulevard and Pomegranate Avenue, the release said. Officers found a man, later identified as Deion Fields, who was dead from gunshot wounds, police said.

According to the press release, during the investigation, detectives found a person of interest in the area with a firearm. That person is being treated at a local hospital for mental health concerns.

Police said it is not yet known whether the shootings are related. Investigators said it appears to be an isolated incident and there is no immediate danger to the public.

“Our investigators are still working to understand what happened,” Sanford Police Chief Cecil Smith said, urging witnesses to come forward.

‘We believe there were witnesses who saw something. We encourage them to come forward and work with us to take these violent individuals off our streets.” Chief Smith said.
