Man stole from hospital gift shop while girlfriend was in ICU, deputies say

Suspect arrested in Georgia

Loggan Miller

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. – A man is accused of stealing thousands of dollars worth of costume jewelry from a gift shop at Health First Viera Hospital while his girlfriend was being treated in the ICU, according to the Brevard County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies said surveillance video from the hospital on Oct. 28 showed Loggan Miller, 20, entering and exiting the ICU room where his girlfriend was being treated. Miller tried to open the door to the gift shop with an unknown object, but when he couldn't, he obtained the keys and opened the shop, according to a warrant.

Deputies said Miller had been in the gift shop earlier in the day and inquired about the jewelry there.

After he entered with the key, he damaged a jewelry display case valued at $100 and stole approximately $5,000 worth of costume jewelry and other items and stuffed it all in a large garbage bag, which he stashed in the ICU waiting room until he could return with a woman's handbag to store the items, according to authorities.

Deputies said they identified Miller as the man in the surveillance video through interviews with hospital staff and other witnesses. They said they learned that Miller and his girlfriend were in Brevard County from Georgia to attend Miller's girlfriend's grandmother's funeral. The pair returned to Georgia after leaving the hospital.

Brevard deputies contacted deputies in Georgia who went to the home where Miller and his girlfriend live with another man. The roommate told deputies that Miller had brand new jewelry when he returned from Florida, which he thought was strange because he didn't think Miller could afford that much jewelry, authorities said.

Stolen jewelry was found at that home, in Miller's truck when deputies located him and at Miller's girlfriend's mother's house, according to the report.

A warrant was issued for Miller's arrest and he was booked into the Brevard County Jail Monday morning on charges of burglary of an unoccupied structure, grand theft and criminal mischief.
