ORMOND BEACH, Fla. – Police are searching for a man who they say posed as an Uber driver on Friday outside of a downtown Ormond Beach restaurant.
Ormond Beach police said the incident was reported by an actual Uber driver on Sunday who heard about the incident from the victims.
Several women were waiting outside of the restaurant when the man apparently noticed them looking at their phones and approached them, asking if they were waiting for an Uber, according to police.
Police said the women responded that they were and the man told them to get into his vehicles, but before they got in, one of the women looked at her Uber app and noticed the driver and vehicle information didn't match.
"The suspect became insistent, telling the ladies to get in his vehicle while continuing to identify himself as their Uber driver," police said in a release.
The man drove away when the actual Uber driver arrived. The man was described by police as Hispanic with a muscular build and teardrop tattoos on his face. He was driving what appeared to be what police call a "tricked out" black Chrysler 300 with a Tennessee license plate.
Officers are looking to speak to the potential victims in the case or any other victims to contact them at 386-676-3520.
Police are also urging the public to verify their Uber driver, driver's vehicle and the tag number, along with looking at the GPS position of the Uber driver and estimated time of their arrival.
