DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – A man who police say broke into the Halifax Humane Society in Volusia County and stole donation containers has been arrested.
James Donnelly, 49, was arrested on several charges, including burglary, grand theft and fleeing or attempting to elude in connection with the theft at the animal shelter.
Police said they were called to 2364 LPGA Blvd. around 8:30 p.m. on Oct. 23 in reference to a business alarm and found that someone had thrown a brick through a window on the southeast corner of the property.
Officers searched the building, but the culprit had left, according to the report.
Halifax Humane Society employees told police that a cash register and two donation containers were missing. It's unclear how much money was stolen.
Barry KuKes, community outreach director for Halifax Humane Society, said the animal shelter needs donations to keep caring for pets.
"We have some animals that stay for us for over a year. Some people don't realize that we care for them, bathe them, walk them, feed them, give them meds. So, we basically need the funds to help us do that," KuKes said.
Details about Donnelly's arrest have not been released.
