ORLANDO, Fla. – Orlando's first medical marijuana dispensary will open on North Orange Avenue in the Ivanhoe Village neighborhood.
Winter Garden-based Knox Medical Inc. is a few weeks away from opening their first Orlando location, Knox Medical spokesman Adam Sharon told News 6.
The storefront will be at 1901 N. Orange Ave. next to the popular brunch spot, White Wolf Cafe.
Knox Medical is planning to open locations in Gainesville, Jacksonville, Lake Worth and Tallahassee.
The company grows marijuana and sells cannabis oils, drops and capsules.
Knox Nursery, also known as Knox Medical, is one of two Central Florida locations approved by the Department of Health to dispense low-THC oil and medical marijuana. There are seven dispensing organizations statewide.
More than a dozen Orlando doctors are licensed to prescribe medical marijuana.
Florida voters approved a state constitutional amendment Nov. 8 to legalize medical marijuana, broadening access to pot beyond the limited therapeutic uses approved two years ago by the Legislature.
Specifically, the measure allows prescriptions for 10 illnesses: cancer, epilepsy, glaucoma, AIDS, post-traumatic stress disorder, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Crohn's disease, Parkinson's and multiple sclerosis. It also allows doctors to prescribe pot for any similar ailment.
The Florida Department of Health started the process in February of accepting applications for medical marijuana identifications cards for residents.
The application for Florida patients and caregivers requires a $75 fee, a copy of a government-issued ID and a passport photo.
