Fatal crash simulation drives home reality of drunken driving at Bishop Moore

Keri Anne Demott killed in Brevard county by drunken driver in 2015

ORLANDO, Fla. – An ambulance, helicopter and all the makings of a horrible drunken driving accident played out for senior year students at Bishop Moore Catholic High School in Orlando.

This scene was fake but News 6 anchor Matt Austin gave students a real-life warning before they celebrated prom.

"One bad decision can change each one of your lives."

It's a reality thousands live each and every day. Bill Demott pointed to the wrecked cars and tearfully told students his story.

"Every time I close my eyes, I see this," Demott said.

His 20-year-old daughter, Keri Anne Demott, was killed in Brevard County by a drunken driver in 2015. That driver, Keith Pumphrey, had previous DUI's and was recently sentenced to 15 years in prison. Demott is now urging lawmakers to make strong laws for offenders.

"If I can reach just one, that's one less person, that's one lesson family that's going to have to have this talk," Demott said.

Melissa Walsh also spoke. She decided to drink and drive nearly a decade ago and flipped her car five times on Clarcona-Ocoee Road. Walsh explained the injuries she and a friend sustained.

"She ended up landing on her butt, breaking her tailbone, and I ended up landing on my head, breaking my neck in five places," she said.

It seemed to get through to students who sat quietly, pledging not to drink or text while driving. The drunken driving presentation is put on by law enforcement at schools across the country each year to drive home sobriety.

News 6 is also working to help change laws for distracted driving in a Driving Change campaign.
