DeLAND, Fla. – Volusia County councilmembers approved $12 million for expand the SunRail to DeLand on Thursday,
The Volusia County Council said there was never a question whether they wanted SunRail, it was more about the technicalities involving tracks and if there would be enough money to support it.
"DeLand absolutely, absolutely supports DeLand SunRail station," said Bob Apgar, Mayor of DeLand.
"We're thankful for your action today. We think over time, it will prove a great benefit," said Wendy Libby, President of Stetson University.
Everyone is onboard with SunRail coming to DeLand. There was also approval of the 12 million dollar line of credit for phase two of the extension. However, there were some questions over the single or double tracks that came up in Monday's county council meeting.
"There's no way you can do 15 minute times on the train at 35 miles per hour which is the track. It's 12 miles, it's up and back. It's almost a half an hour, so it has to be double tracked." said Jason Davis, County Chair.
After much discussion, FDOT agreed and said two miles of the extension will be single track which includes the French Avenue Bridge and the rest will be double.
"It's going to happen. DeLand is going to be the end line for SunRail," said Davis.
The council said it still has some questions and will address those at the SunRail commission meeting in Orlando tomorrow at 10 a.m.
