New app promises to be Facebook of the roads

Critics concerned over safety issues

DALLAS – A new social media app is hoping to become the Facebook of the highway. The app is called Karmatic and it connects drivers using their license plates.

The app lets users enter their license plate number and engage with other drivers who have done the same.

Drivers can send notes, record voice messages and even rate other drivers on a scale of 1-10.

"Maybe someone is double parked next to you or somebody parked too close, you don't have to leave a note anymore," said developer Scott Popescu.

Popescu says all accounts are private and if users are not friends, they will only see a username and picture.

However, critics have expressed concern over the app's safety. "Realistically, people are going to be doing this while they're driving, So it's going to open up that Pandora's Box when we're talking about texting and driving," said legal expert Pete Schulte.

Schulte says he worries users will not follow the app's terms and conditions to use it as a passenger, but Popescu says they have measures to keep users safe.

"We have a technology coming in that's going to allow it to when you're physically moving it's going to say, 'are you the one driving?'" said Popescu.
