ORLANDO, Fla. – A tornado warning was canceled for Sumter County as severe weather warnings were issued across Central Florida Wednesday evening, according to the National Weather Service.
A severe thunderstorm warning is in effect for Lake and Volusia counties until 5:30 p.m. The areas under the warning include Deltona, DeLand, New Smyrna beach, Edgewater and Orange City. Wind gust of 60 mph and nickel-sized hail is expected.
A severe thunderstorm warning was issued for Osceola and Brevard counties until 6:15 p.m. The areas of Kissimmee, St. Cloud, Lake Toho, Buena Ventura Lakes, Viera, Suntree, Melbourne, Rockledge, Cocoa, Cocoa Beach and Satellite Beach could experience wind gusts up to 60 mph and quarter-sized hail.
A tornado warning for northern Sumter County was canceled just before 4 p.m. Wednesday.
At 3:27 p.m., a severe thunderstorm, capable of producing a tornado, moved into the area, according to the National Weather Service.
Several trees were reported down around the Florida turnpike following the tornado warning, according to National Weather Service Tampa.
"We are pinpointing a new front moving through Central Florida," News 6 meteorologist Troy Bridges said. "Rain chances will be as high as 50 percent as a few storms push through, with strong winds and lightning."
The wind is not helping conditions for firefighters battling wildfires in three Central Florida counties.
Ahead of the front, temperatures will soar into the low 80s. The average high in Orlando on this date is 73.
Behind the front, temperatures will drop into the 50s overnight.
Expect a high in the low 70s Thursday across Central Florida.
The next round of rain comes over the weekend as the new boundary brings a 50 percent coverage of showers and storms on Saturday afternoon.
"Many storms could have lightning and strong wind gusts," Bridges said.
Afternoon highs will be near 80 on Saturday and Sunday.
Sunday's rain chances will be 20 percent.
