VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – Badlands, a sub-adult loggerhead turtle is set to be released following a medical recovery at the Marine Science Center in Volusia County.

The turtle is scheduled to be released Feb. 1, at 10 a.m. at the Beach Street ramp in Ponce Inlet, officials said. The release is subject to favorable weather and surf conditions.

The loggerhead exhibited signs of mild dehydration and an impacted gastrointestinal tract, according to a press release.

Under the care of the dedicated team at the MSC, Badlands not only regained health but also saw an increase in weight from 156 pounds to a robust 167 pounds, officials said.

The release event is open to the public, with paid beach parking available on the south side of the ramp, contingent on tide conditions. Alternatively, spectators can park free of charge at the Marine Science Center and make their way to the beach.

The Marine Science Center, renowned for its commitment to the rescue and rehabilitation of turtles, reptiles, and seabirds, extends an invitation to the public to witness Badlands’ return to the ocean.

The center, located at 100 Lighthouse Drive in Ponce Inlet, offers immersive and interactive educational opportunities for visitors daily.

The Marine Science Center’s facilities include a turtle hospital, a marine display area, and the newly inaugurated Raptor Education and Conservation Exhibit.

Visitors are welcome from noon to 4 p.m. on Sundays and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. from Tuesday through Saturday.
