Step 1
Charge the battery. Take out the battery and charge it while you set up. Charging takes a few hours.
Step 2
Determine usage. Is your new video doorbell going to replace your old one entirely? Or are you going to keep your old doorbell as a backup and use your new video doorbell as primary? Some video doorbells are designed to use the wiring from an old doorbell to power the new doorbell, but if you want to do that make sure you buy the right video doorbell (it should say on the box “wired” instead of “battery”). You may want to consider calling an electrician to remove the wires from the old doorbell and either properly terminate them (remember, they have low-voltage power in them!) if you don’t want to reuse them or connect them to your new wired video doorbell so you never have to charge a battery.
Step 3
Find the instructions. For Ring doorbells, the instructions that come inside the box are life-saving! They contain a link to download the Ring app which walks you step by step through connecting the doorbell to your phone. The instructions also contain a QR code that you’ll need to scan to pair the doorbell with your phone.
Step 4
Pair your doorbell with your phone. Again, use the instructions! Download the video doorbell app. Ring’s app walks you through the pairing.
Step 5
Mount the doorbell. Decide where you want it – cover the hole of your old doorbell or next to, above, below your existing doorbell. Ring’s instructions tell you exactly which screws to use for mounting and which ones to use for securing the cover (don’t mix these up, they’re different lengths and can damage the doorbell if wrong!). If you have a wood frame home, you can screw the mounting screws right into the wood. If it’s concrete block, drill into the concrete, install concrete anchors, and screw the screws into the anchors (through the doorbell to hold it in place of course).
Step 6
Adjust the settings. Ring’s doorbell allows you to customize how sensitive it is to picking up motion and motion field of view, among other things. You can also set how it alerts and notifies you on your phone. Using your app you can watch live video and talk to the person at your door, it’s pretty cool!
