Broken mailbox? Replace it yourself!

Step-by-step repair

MARION COUNTY, Fla. – Susan in Summerfield had a broken (vandalized?) mailbox and a challenge - replace it with the exact same one only allowed by her HOA. She found it at Ace and we installed it! You can too!

If you have a project you’d like Erik to tackle, send us an email at GettingResultsAtHome@wkmg.com and next week Erik might just show up at your door!

We purchased:

New mailbox

We brought with us:

Phillips screwdriver

We recommend: electric screwdriver

Step 1

Pull off your old mailbox. Most mailboxes are just laid over a wooden 4″x4″ post sunk into the ground. Susan’s mailbox had four screws screwed through the plastic mailbox stand and into the wooden post. We removed all four screws and lifted off the old mailbox.

Step 2

Assess your post. Is your old post solid? Loose? Rotting? You may need a new one. If you need to replace it, grab a post-hole digger, dig several feet down, and drop in your new post. If your old one is in good shape, move on.

Step 3

Assemble your new mailbox. This Gibraltar mailbox had to be put together - the box itself, the front door, the back door, and then attached to the stand. We followed instructions. Most of the pieces slid together and were secured by a few Phillips-head screws. An electric screwdriver really helps with this.

Step 4

Slide your new mailbox over your post and mount. The new mailbox (just like the old one) only required four screws that we screwed through the plastic housing and into the post behind it.

That’s it! You just got results at home!
