WINTER GARDEN, Fla. – Corie Murray, News 6 photojournalist and host of the “Black Men Sundays” podcast is getting results for Central Florida families this Thanksgiving.
Last year, Corie set out to help 50 families for his turkey giveaway, but thanks to help from our News 6 viewers, he was able to essentially quadruple that number and provide a turkey for 230 families on Thanksgiving.
Now, he’s set to do it again this year and has a goal of donating 400 turkeys ahead of Thanksgiving.
On Wednesday, Corie kicked off his turkey giveaway at the Maxey Community Center in Winter Garden.
“When you’re you know in this community, riding through, you realize this is a bigger deal than just turkeys,” Murray said.
While Wednesday’s giveaway was more geared towards senior citizens, he’s also helping to feed families of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Central Florida.
“If I’m going to make this commitment to our community, if I am going to make this commitment period, ain’t no way y’all not going to be included,” Murray said. “I want to make sure every year when we service the Boys and Girls Clubs of Central Florida, you guys are in the mix too.”
Several came out to Wednesday’s turkey giveaway including lifelong Winter Garden resident, Beverly Mackroy who picked up her turkey at the Maxey Community Center.
“It’s a blessing because I can do my turkey, I can do my dressing, and I can feed my family, my grandkids, it’s wonderful,” Mackroy said. “I am so blessed to receive my turkey.”
Mackroy met Corie the year before and said she appreciates him and what he is doing for Central Florida families.
“It makes me feel wonderful,” Mackroy said. “It makes me feel that we have someone that comes out and cares about the neighborhood, care about people in the community, it’s a blessing.”
