Gasoline prices have continued their downward trend toward three-year lows as the U.S. election nears. Experts attribute the lower prices to lower consumer demand and Israel's decision not to strike Iranian oil facilities amid escalating conflict in recent weeks.

"While many Americans may incorrectly credit the upcoming election for the declines, politicians have little influence over the strong seasonal forces that drive prices lower in autumn," GasBuddy analyst Patrick De Haan said in a statement Monday.

Demand could continue to decline, as it does seasonally this time of year when colder weather keeps more Americans off the roads. The Energy Information Administration projects that decline to extend into next year. The agency overseeing data on oil and natural gas products estimates the average cost for a gallon of gasoline next year will be $3.20, down from $3.30 per gallon in 2024.
