TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – On Tuesday, Florida Chief Financial Officer Jimmy Patronis sent a letter to former President Donald Trump about $54,000 in unclaimed property Trump has in the state.

“Unclaimed property” refers to financial assets that are unknown, lost, abandoned or left inactive by their owners.

According to the CFO’s office, the following types of unclaimed property are the most common:

  • Dormant bank accounts
  • Unclaimed insurance proceeds
  • Stocks
  • Dividends
  • Uncashed checks
  • Deposits
  • Credit balances
  • Refunds
  • Contents in abandoned safe deposit boxes

Usually, these assets are held by business or government firms for around five years. If they aren’t able to contact the owner to return the asset, it’s then reported to the Florida Department of Financial Services.

Anyone can search to check whether they have unclaimed property with the state. To do so, head to the FDFS’ “Treasure Hunt” website here and click “SEARCH FOR UNCLAIMED PROPERTY.”

After inputting your first and last name, the website will determine whether you have been any unclaimed assets reported to the state.

Meanwhile, Patronis’ full letter to Trump reads as follows:

Dear President Trump,

As Florida's Chief Financial Officer and a former small business owner, I understand how important it is to live and work in a state that supports private industry and provides opportunities for businesses to grow and thrive. I grew up in my family’s restaurant where we were taught to serve the customer and how to put the customer first. I tell my people all the time, if you don’t serve the customer, I will find someone who will. That is also something I admire about many of your operations in the state of Florida. We are proud to host many Trump properties and businesses and, of course, are honored to have you and your family as residents of the Sunshine State.

In Florida, we have a unique unclaimed property program that is designed to return lost or unknown financial assets back to the original owners. The most common types of unclaimed property are dormant bank accounts, stocks, dividends, and more. Since taking office as CFO, nearly $2.4 billion in unclaimed property has been returned to Florida residents. Upon conducting a search for unclaimed property using the term TRUMP, my Division of Unclaimed Property believes their search results have revealed over $54,000 waiting to be claimed by you, your family, and your businesses or properties throughout the state of Florida. There are some very, very nasty people coming after you, and every dollar matters in your efforts to fight back against these radical state attorneys who have weaponized the courts. We need you and your team to have every resource possible to get through these BS charges so you can get back to work in Making America Great Again!

If you or your team visit FLTreasureHunt.gov or if you would like to contact me personally, my team and I would be happy to process any and all requests so that we can return your unclaimed property to you as soon as possible. My door is always open, and my phone is ready to take your call. You can even reach me on TRUTH at @JimmyPatronis. Thank you for your contributions to our state and our country. I am looking forward to hearing back from you and encourage the entire Trump family and all your employees here in Florida to search for their unclaimed property and claim it today!

Sincerely,

Jimmy Patronis

Chief Financial Officer

State of Florida
