NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. – A New Smyrna Beach man recorded video of sharks just feet from young swimmers over Memorial Day weekend and posts it to YouTube, where it's gained more than 7,000 views.
The video shows the danger lurking off the coast in waist-deep water, right off of New Smyrna Beach Inlet.
"I noticed a bunch of dark shadows in the water and I thought, 'Wow, this is interesting, I wonder what this is,'" said Steve Anest. "It became apparent just by their signature shape that they were sharks. Sharks were everywhere. In a second, if I would've fallen off, or she would've fallen, that's where the fear came in."
Steve Anest and his wife Chrystal were out paddle-boarding at the New Smyrna Beach Inlet during the holiday weekend when they noticed close to a dozen sharks feet from swimmers, bathers and kids.
"There were sharks all over the place and the people were swimming by them left and right and they had no idea," said Steve Anest.
For the couple, the sight was fascinating, but frightening for others.
"Well, don't get me wrong, I don't want to get bit by a shark or anything," said Chrystal Anest.
"It's rare that you see that many sharks in the water, ever; you're lucky to see one," said Steve Anest.
Some beachgoers who saw the video said they wouldn't necessarily call it luck.
"That's a lot of sharks. I'd be so scared," said Haile Joice.
Taylor Langdon saw the video and said, "That's scary. I don't want to think about that while I'm swimming."
