DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – There are new developments in a story you saw first on Local 6 earlier this month about a nursing home investigation that began after a 75-year-old woman showed signs of sexual assault.
Local 6 has learned that two sexual offenders live at the Daytona Beach Health and Rehabilitation Center, and they're among more than a dozen people investigators are in the process of questioning.
Isaac Rudolph Battles, 56, was arrested in 1990 for a lewd and lascivious act on a child under 16 and John Arthur Lee, 58, was arrested on the same charges in 1998. A spokeswoman with the state's Health Care Administration told the Daytona Beach News-Journal that it is not illegal for sex offenders to live in nursing homes or rehab facilities.
The investigation began at the beginning of July when a terminally ill woman with dementia complained of being pregnant. The woman was taken to a hospital and doctors found she had contracted a sexually transmitted disease.
Daytona Beach Police Chief Michael Chitwood originally told Local 6 he was frustrated with the facility's lack of cooperation with the investigation, saying staff at the facility would not allow investigators inside. When Local 6 reached out to the facility's attorney earlier this month, Rick Harris said that the nursing home had conducted its own investigation.
"You research for yourself how long certain sexually transmitted diseases can be dormant and asymptomatic in large percentages of the population," Harris said.
The interviews and investigation are ongoing.
