Tonney McCants arrested in shooting at Kensington Oaks Apartments

SANFORD, Fla. – An arrest has been made after a man was killed and a woman was wounded in a shooting late Wednesday in Sanford, police said.

Tonney McCants was taken into custody after the shooting, which reported around 10:30 p.m. at the Kensington Oaks Apartments on Mellonville Avenue near Lake Monroe.

Officers received a 911 call and found a man, identified as Marquis Grooms, shot dead and a woman, identified as Whitney McCloud, suffering from a gunshot wound to her hand. She was taken to Central Florida Regional Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Neighbors told News 6 that the shooting occurred inside an apartment and children might have been inside during the incident.

"My boyfriend called 911 because he was hearing somebody say that they got shot or somebody's dead," a neighbor told News 6. "Then, he was looking, and I guess he saw someone running in and out. Kids were crying and there was a big commotion."

McCants turned himself in at 6:30 a.m. Thursday.

No other details on the shooting were immediately available.
