Protest against ban on street performers

Store owners along Park Avenue requested ban

WINTER PARK, Fla. – A 19-year-old poet organized a gathering on Friday to protest a ban on street performers in the city of Winter Park.

Paul Felker, who writes impromptu poetry for passersby, called on people to join his protest in Central Park.

"All are welcome to participate in our funeral for free public expression from 10-5 pm," Felker wrote in a post on Facebook.  "Wear black and remember, if you stand for nothing, you'll fall for anything!"

On Dec. 14, an ordinance was passed banning street performance acts from the sidewalks along Park Avenue.

Store owners requested the ban. Many of them complained the performers were blocking streets and playing loud music.

Performers are now restricted to Central Park, which is across from Park Avenue.
