WAYCROSS, Ga. – A man who once ran for mayor of Waycross was arrested Monday after police found the body of his dead mother at their home.

Waycross police said Rodney Dillon, 53, had not reported her death and was continuing to spend money from her bank account. Dillon was taken into custody Monday and charged with concealing the death of another. He was being held in the Ware County jail.

Police said they received information that the woman was missing person. Detectives said Dillon said his mother had been in a care facility in Florida and he was living in her home.

“Her money was being spent here,” Lt. Benji Hersey told the Waycross Journal-Herald. “A search warrant was secured for the Carrie Drive address and police found the woman dead in her home, along with him."

Police did not confirm how long the Dillon’s mother had been dead.

A resident of the area told News4Jax the woman used to walk the neighborhood and was nice, but her health had declined. She hadn't seen her since last summer and thought her son put her in a nursing home after she got Alzheimer's.

Dillon made an unsuccessful run for mayor of Waycross in 2003.
