ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – A vote is set for Thursday on a controversial plan to bring thousands of new homes to Orange County.
The county's planning board is set to take up a proposal for two new developments. They are both north of Colonial Drive in an area around Lake Pickett Road.
Critics have been fighting the plan for months. Those opposed to the plan argue those homes will bring too much traffic to Colonial Drive and that it will ruin the rural feel of the area.
Groups like the League of Woman Voters have also spoken out against the proposal.
Protestors against the plan held signs outside, hours before the topic was brought up at the meeting.
Maljorie Holt was joined by several members from the Sierra Club who said they're trying to maintain a boundary.
"There's a boundary and on one side of the boundary you see farm animals and trees and open space and on the other side you see tightly clustered development and cities and towns," said Holt.
Several people brought up the traffic argument again. Scott Kidd called SR 50 a "parking lot" on most evenings already.
"We need to have the roads expanded first as a preliminary to installing the homes and businesses that are going to be there," said Kidd.
