Escaped zebra involved in Hillsborough County crash, deputies say

Deputies: Zebra crashes into driver's side of pickup truck

RIVERVIEW, Fla. – A zebra that got loose in Hillsborough County was involved in a crash Friday afternoon, deputies said.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office responded to a crash on County Road 672 involving a Ford pickup truck and escaped zebra at 1:58 p.m., deputies said.

Deputies said the driver of the truck was traveling west on County Road 672 when an adult female zebra that was walking on the south side of the road ran into the driver's side of the truck.

The impact of the crash broke and shattered the mirror, causing some of the glass to injure the driver, deputies said.

Deputies said the zebra then fled into a nearby field, according to the Sheriff's Office. Hillsborough County deputies located the zebra by flying the Sheriff's Office helicopter over the field, deputies said. Deputies, along with employees of the zebra's owner, caught the zebra.

The driver of the truck was transported to Brandon hospital to be checked, deputies said. The zebra was returned to its owner.
