ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – Orange County commissioners are expected to vote Tuesday on a proposed fertilizer ban.
The ban forbids the use of nitrogen fertilizer from June 1-Sept. 30.
Proponents of the ban argue summer storms and washouts can send the fertilizer into waterways and increase the risk of algae blooms. They say the fertilizer not only makes the water unsafe for swimming but also impacts tourism.
Those against the ban say nitrogen fertilizer helps lawns grow and keeps them looking healthy.
Under the proposal. anyone caught using nitrogen fertilizer during the ban would face fines up to $100.
The vote is scheduled for 2 p.m.
