Sinkhole opens at Orlando apartment complex

A sinkhole opens on Sherwood Terrace Drive in Orange County.

ORLANDO, Fla. – A building was evacuated late Sunday night at an Orlando apartment complex when a sinkhole opened.

Officials from Orange County Fire Rescue said the sinkhole was reported at 746 Sherwood Terrace Drive was 30 feet wide.

Thirty people were forced from The Landmark at West Place Apartments and a second building was partially evacuated.

They were taken to a clubhouse at the apartment complex and will remain there until weather conditions are safe enough for them to be transported to a shelter.

Heavy rains and strong winds will continue to move through Central Florida until Monday morning as Hurricane Irma makes its way across the state.
