12-year-old girl accidentally shot in head in Lake County, deputies say

Children found gun, took it to adult

LAKE COUNTY, Fla. – A 12-year-old girl was accidentally shot in the head when a gun discharged Thursday night in the Pine Lakes area, according to the Lake County Sheriff's Office.

The victim was taken to Florida Hospital DeLand to be treated for a non-life-threatening injury.

Randall Cannon, 29, was arrested as a result of the shooting. Lt. John Herrell with the Lake County Sheriff's Office said the .22 caliber rifle used in the shooting belonged to Cannon.

Cannon is a convicted felon and charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and tampering with evidence after deputies say he hid the gun in the woods.

The 12-year-old's grandmother, who wished not to be identified, said the girl and her cousin were outside their home Thursday afternoon when a 7-year-old neighbor told the victim his mom had asked him to bring a tent bag from outside back into the house.

According to the girl, the 7-year-old boy said he found a .22 caliber rifle inside the tent bag. He took it to his mom, who deputies say accidentally triggered the gun.

The bullet hit the top of the girls head, according to the report. Her grandmother rushed her to the hospital. She was later released.
