Large trash fire burns at Apopka recycling yard

Heavy smoke visible from Maitland Boulevard

APOPKA, Fla. – Fire crews worked into the night to put out hot spots in a fire at a recycling center in Apopka on Monday.

Sky 6 flew over the scene, where thick black smoke filled the air.

"We've got a very large fire that is an active fire near Orange County," said Carrie Proudfit with Orange County Fire Rescue. "The plant that is behind us is a recycling plant and it appears that they deal with mostly with aluminum and metal type of materials that on ground."

Investigators said that calls came into dispatch just before 5 p.m.

Firefighters could be seen pouring water on the large pile of debris.

Crews also said they were using thermal technology to target the direction in which the fire was moving. "You also notice we have some of our UAV units, or drones up in the sky and they are giving critical information to the firefighters on scene who are trying to mitigate this fire," said Proudfit.

Crews on the ground could also be seen working quickly to prevent the fire from spreading as smoke filled the air.

"I do know that they are using some heavy machinery, some equipment in there to help move some of the piles of debris out of the way, so certainly that's been a resource," said Proudfit.

No injuries were reported and no other structures were damaged.

Investigators are still working to determine the cause of the fire.
