Boeing 757 lands safely despite losing wheel during takeoff

United Flight 1001 makes it to Denver

LOS ANGELES – A Boeing 757 lost a wheel while taking off during a United Airlines flight out of Los Angeles on Monday.

United Flight 1001 had just left LAX for Denver when air traffic controllers said one of the plane’s wheels fell off and crashed to the runway below.

Each set of landing gear is equipped with multiple wheels, however, allowing the plane to touch down safely at its destination.

The Federal Aviation Administration and United Airlines are now investigating the incident, the second such issue seen in a Boeing-built plane this year.
