ORLANDO, Fla. – Relief is on the way days after Hurricane Irma hit Central Florida.
Grocery stores across the area are getting new shipments of fresh food and supplies every day. Shoppers tell News 6 the trucks are a welcome sight.
Michael Martinez stopped by the Publix on Colonial Drive to pick up the essentials. He said he's hosting friends who still don't have power.
"It was a little chaotic in there. Everyone is restocking after the storm, so it's a pretty crazy time," Martinez said.
Several aisles were blocked as employees quickly filled fridges and freezers.
"People have to eat. Meat, stuff like that. We can't live off ravioli and ramen noodles for our lives. We have to eat," shopper Tiffany Canada said.
Inside the Walmart on John Young Parkway, boxes are everywhere. Employees were unlocking food and filing coolers that stood empty for days.
Stores across Central Florida were forced to throw away perishable food because of the storm.
Walmart officials told News 6 there is high demand from local suppliers, but they are working around the clock to load up semi trucks and deliver products. Walmart said stores are getting more fresh and perishable foods by the hour.
That's happening at stores all over Central Florida, including the Publix on Edgewater Drive. News 6 was there as a new shipment arrived Thursday afternoon.
Shoppers said it is a sign of things returning to normal after Irma.
"Just about full again. They're working on it," shopper Rob Grzelewski said.
