Cocoa Utilities issues boil water notice after main breaks

Hurricane Irma causes water main breaks

Damage on Sept. 10, 2017 after an EF 0 tornado touched down in Palm Bay destroying 6 mobile homes.

BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. – The Cocoa Utility System issued a precautionary boil water notice for all of its customers Monday morning after the department suffered multiple water main breaks during Hurricane Irma.

The notice applies to the entire system, including Patrick Air Force Base, Kennedy Space Center, Port Canaveral, Cape Canaveral, Cocoa Beach, Merritt Island, Cocoa, Port St. John, Rockledge and Viera.

Crews won't be able to assess the breaks until weather conditions improve and roads are passable.

The water is safe for bathing and laundering, but customers should conserve water until further notice, according to a news release.

Tap water can be disinfected by adding eight drops of unscented household bleach per gallon of water and allowing the mixture to stand for at least 30 minutes. For cloudy water, use 16 drops.

The precautionary boil water notice will stay in effect for at least two days or until the problem has been resolved.
