HOLLY HILL, Fla. – A Holly Hill police officer investigating a domestic dispute shot a man who pointed a gun at him, according to authorities.
Michael Morrison, 56, was shot in the incident, which happened around 4 a.m. Monday inside a home on Flamingo Drive in Holly Hill.
Morrison suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to Halifax Health Medical Center. He was taken to jail after being treated at the hospital.
According to authorities, Daytona Beach police were investigating a domestic violence incident on Ridgewood Avenue that led to Flamingo Drive in Holly Hill.
Holly Hill police then began assisting, and officers said Morrison armed himself with a gun inside the Flamingo Drive home and refused to come out.
Police said Morrison pointed the gun at an officer in the back yard, and the officer fired one shot at him, striking him in the torso.
"This incident drives home the extreme dangers our officers face each day in defense of the peace and security of our community. I am very thankful that none of our personnel was injured or killed. We will await the outcome of the FDLE investigation before further comment," Holly Hill Police Chief Mark Barker said.
A woman claiming to be the man's daughter said she was on the phone with her father when the shooting occurred.
The officer, Cpl. Matt Armstrong of the Uniformed Patrol Division will be placed on leave, which is standard procedure following a shooting. Police said Armstrong has served with the Holly Hill Police Department for 6 years and is a supervisor in his division.
