Melbourne police investigate ‘suspicious incident’

Melbourne police are investigating after a car with a body inside was found in the Eau Gallie River near Ballard Park Tuesday morning, News 6 partner Florida Today reported.

Lt. Trevor Schaffer said detectives are gathering evidence in what is being described as a “suspicious incident” at the public boat ramps.

Police said in a news release that a 78-year-old woman was found dead inside a blue Hyundai Accent and she’s believed to have entered the water during the overnight hours.

No signs of foul play have been discovered.

Witnesses at the scene said the car was discovered when boaters discovered something floating in the water before noticing the license plate beneath the surface.

Detectives and crime scene investigators along with a dive team were present at the scene throughout the morning.

Police are asking anyone who may have captured the car on surveillance video to call them at 321-608-6481. Tips can also be submitted anonymously through Crimeline at 800-423-TIPS.
