Light Orlando celebrates Valentine’s Day with projects, treats for children at nursery

Event part of weeklong service project initiative

ORLANDO, Fla. – Heart-shaped stickers, markers, and smiles. Preschool students at Orlando Day Nursery got a real treat on Valentine’s Day.

They got the chance to learn how to make Valentine boxes and not only did they pick up the skills of decorating, but they also learned about friendship and how to share with other students.

“They are doing so much more than that. They are developing social and emotional skills, they are putting letters on their boxes, they are doing fine motor skills. All that good stuff,” Liz Franqui with Orlando Day Nursery said.

The Orlando Day Nursery is a nonprofit school that’s been around for over 100 years.

Troy Wright with Light Orlando decided to celebrate Valentine’s Day at the school by bringing sweets and even stuffed toy animals donated by the Salvation Army.

“Really there’s no better way to show love to anyone to serve them and so we are trying to create an atmosphere or environment where we can come out and serve one another,” Wright said.

Wright said Tuesday’s Valentine’s Day party is part of a week’s worth of events helping to get results in our area.

On Monday, the foundation worked to bring spa treatments to women living at the Steps Center in Apopka.

Volunteers showed up to help those recovering from substance abuse.

“Today we are here at the Orlando Day Nursery. Tomorrow, we are going to be doing a service project with Hope Charter School cleaning up their garden,” Wright said.
