ORLANDO, Fla. – Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer and Commissioner Regina Hill on Thursday gave a first look of what Parramore Oaks’ phase II will look like.
The complex was built in an effort to expand affordable house in the Parramore neighborhood and opened four years ago with over 200 units, including townhomes.
“Affordable housing remains one of the biggest challenges that we face here in the city of Orlando,” Mayor Buddy Dyer said.
The mayor’s speech was interrupted Thursday by a family claiming that they cannot afford living on the property, saying their rent has gone up.
“My rent was $875 and now, now it’s $1,250 as we speak, starting November 1st,” the woman said.
Dyer and Hill allowed the woman to speak and did not directly respond to her.
Hill, who grew up in Parramore, said the city has come a long way to provide affordable housing.
“When you look outside your door you will see housing that has been created and now eight more are underway, with the CRA giving up to $150,000 in down payment assistance,” Hill said.
In 2019, rent for most units at Parramore Oaks ranged from $400 to $900 per month.
According to ParramoreOaks.com, a one-bedroom, one-bath home starts at $775.
“We can’t do anything about rent increase, but I can tell you nowhere in Florida will you be able to afford a three-bedroom for less than $1,200 a month,” Hill said.
As for phase II, officials said residents could move in by early 2024.
