Orange County Public Schools confirmed the victim was a sophomore at Dr. Phillips High School and grief counselors were made available to students and staff.

The principal sent this message to parents.

“I know I speak for our entire community when I express the grief we feel of the loss of one of our own. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family as they go through this extremely difficult time,” Jackie Ramsey said.

Elizabeth Morgan has a mentorship program called Morgan Ministries along Mercy Drive where she works to keep kids on track. She didn’t know Thompson but said his death broke her heart.

“I thought it was really tragic because so many young people are being killed or injured,” Morgan said. “We’ve got to get some solutions going, be protective in a lot of things to kind of curtail of the violence.”

Orange County Commissioners approved nearly $1 million earlier this year for organizations aimed at addressing youth crime, including funding for Morgan’s nonprofit.

“We looked at bullying, we role played, anger management, what were their triggers,” Morgan said.

Investigators have not yet released information about a possible suspect or a motive. News 6 has also asked police if the 15-year old was the intended target.
