Man accused of killing mother of 3, baby in Daytona Beach apartment fire asks to limit case publicity

Charles Ivy charged with 1st-degree arson, 1st-degree murder and attempted murder

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – The man accused of stabbing his ex over 100 times and lighting her Daytona Beach apartment on fire, killing her and her baby, was back in court Wednesday.

Charley Ivy, 34, was charged with first-degree arson, two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of attempted murder.

The woman, 30-year-old Den’Jah Moore, and her 10-month-old son were found dead inside a unit at the Countryside Apartments last month on Beville Road. Two other children, a 4-year-old and 5-year-old, were taken to the hospital, where they remain intubated and in critical condition, according to the last update from authorities.

In court Wednesday, Ivy’s defense team asked the judge to put a temporary restriction on media discovery and comments from people involved in the case to the media.

After Ivy’s arrest, Daytona Beach police Chief Jakari Young said he “deserves a special place in the gates of hell for what he did to this mother and these children.”

The defense told the judge that the Daytona Beach police chief’s comments at the press conference after Ivy’s arrest showed prejudice.

“If those statements were to be said over and over again from law enforcement or the head law enforcement officer, I could see where the defense then could be concerned but a two-sentence quote in an article one time I do not find is prejudicial,” Judge Leah Case said.

The judge ultimately denied the defense’s requests.

Ivy was indicted by a grand jury last week on multiple charges.
